By creating relationships between Kodak Operating Units and universities, research institutions and privately-held companies, Kodak External Alliances is focused on accessing technologies at an early stage in the pipeline thereby strengthening Kodak's competitive position in the marketplace. Some of the alliances mechanisms are:
Privately-Held Company Alliances KEA establishes relationships with privately-held companies to complement Kodak’s internal development processes and provide Kodak access to new technologies, products and services. Partner companies must have strong management teams, established, credible business plans, disruptive infoimaging innovations, and high growth potential. Alliances with these companies can take the form of:
 
  • Licensing agreements,
  • Joint development agreements,
  • Supply/distribution agreements, and
  • Minority equity investment, which includes:
  • Direct, strategic investments
  • Potential to develop commercial relationships
  • Operating unit support
  • Early/mid-stage firms
  • Top-tier venture capitalist as lead investor
  • Financial viability
  • Ownership <20%
  • ~$1-3M investment level

University Alliances include Kodak’s strategic relationships with top-tier Universities and learning institutions.

  • Unrestricted Grants - Kodak uses unrestricted grants to support research in an area of general interest. They provide access to know-how and an understanding of research approaches through collaboration with a university researcher, in an area that complements Kodak's research portfolio.

  • Sponsored Research Projects -Kodak supports sponsored research projects for collaboration in areas of specific interest. These projects will have specific objectives and deliverables defined in a statement of work in collaboration with a university researcher, typically in direct support of Kodak's research portfolio. Kodak External Alliances has negotiated Master Sponsored Research Agreements with a number of key universities in the United States and United Kingdom to streamline project execution by pre-negotiating project terms and conditions.

  • Kodak Fellowship Grants - Kodak supports fellowship grants for select promising students doing research in an area of general interest to Kodak. Kodak Fellowships are initiated by research scientists in the Kodak Research Laboratories in alignment with future research and hiring priorities.
 
Government and Research Institution Alliances leverage federally-funded research by accessing technology through licensing and funded R&D and through collaborative development, in strategically aligned areas, under Cooperative Agreements, cost-shares or grants with federal, university and for-profit labs.
